黃勤 (1893-1952?)
Chin Chester Huang was born in Fujian province, China in 1893. He graduated from Tsing Hua in 1917 and was one of the first two Tsinghua graduates to attend Grinnell College with money from the Boxer Indemnity Fund. Huang arrived at Grinnell in September 1917 (GH 9/11/1917), a few days after Nankai President Zhang Boling and his students.
However, Huang soon transferred to the University of Chicago, then returned to Grinnell in Fall 1918 (GH 11/12/1918). According to Fan Yi Kung’s report on the visit, Huang missed President Zhang Boling’s return visit in November 1918, because he was out of town in Chicago. Huang graduated from Grinnell with a BA degree in Economics in 1919.
After Grinnell Huang studied at Columbia University, New York University, and the University of Chicago, reportedly receiving a M.A. in Banking from NYU (Tan). He obtained practical banking experience by working in Harriman National Bank, New York City in 1919-20. He returned to China in 1921, working for the Zhejiang Industrial Bank in a variety of capacities and locations until1929 when he became branch manager of Shanghai Commercial and Savings Bank in Shanghai and Hong Kong (1929-1941) (Huanqiu, 88). In 1946 Huang became Chief Executive Officer of the Southwest Industrial Bank, but in October 1952 it went bankrupt, and Huang went missing (Tan).
