張澄 [張思海] (1899?-???)
Chen (C.) Chang was born in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province in 1899, though his ancestral homeland was Mongolia.
He graduated from Nankai by 1918 and went to study in Japan, where Tung Mei Liu, Pao Shou Kao, and Yueah Ma, who came to Grinnell in 1919 and 1920, were also studying. Chang then attended Dennison College for one year (1920-1921) before coming to Grinnell College in 1921.
While at Grinnell Chang participated in the activities organized by the Chinese students on campus, such as their October 1922 celebration in the Alumni Recitation Hall auditorium of the founding of the Republic of China. He played a part in a pantomime show titled “Past and Future” directed by K. Y. Lu; other actors included C. T. Chao, J. P. Shen, K. Y. Lu, and S. Y. Liu. He also helped in the highly successful fund-raising dinner for Grinnell-in-China held in the local Congregational church in November 1922. He sat on the committee— chaired by Ke Chang Hsu and including C.C. Ma, T. H. Cheng, and K. Y. Lu—that was responsible for the menu (SB 11/15/1922). He also spoke on “the Chinese Educational Problem” at the local Congregational church in October 1922, alongside fellow Chinese students such as K. C. Wu, C. C. Ma, and H. H. Yang, participating in a program organized by the Chinese Students’ Club at Grinnell (SB 10/21/1922).
Chang graduated from Grinnell in 1924, earning a bachelor’s degree in history and philosophy. He then attended the University of Iowa for graduate work and reportedly earned a master’s degree there. After returning to China, he taught at several institutions such as Northwest Normal University and Lanzhou University, both in Lanzhou, Gansu province. He went to Taiwan after 1949, and taught English at institutions such as Taiwan Normal University, Taiwan University, and Tainan Industrial University until at least 1953. We do not know when he passed away.
